Wireless Fire Alarm Installation In Leasehold Block

A large wireless installation carried out by Future Fire.

Rotherhithe is a lovely area in South-East London, surrounded by the River Thames. It’s bordered on the South by Surrey Quays, on the North and East by the Thames, and on the West by Bermondsey. Ideal for nature lovers with all its green spaces and proximity to the river and wildlife reserves, it’s a perfect area for City commuters and families. Rotherhithe went through a complete regeneration in the 1980s which resulted in many new developments being built since then.

It consists of 20 blocks, with 154 flats.

Brief

We were asked by our client to install a wireless fire alarm system in the communal areas and within each flat to alleviate waking watch which was ultimately costing residents a large amount of money each week. Waking Watch is a system whereby trained fire marshals continually patrol all floors and the exterior perimeter of the building to detect a fire, raise an alarm and carry out the role of evacuation management.

Waking watch costs residents thousands of pounds each week and adhering to a fast turnaround time meant they were able to save money quickly. Given the circumstances, we were presented with a short turnaround time. We managed to supply and install for 20 blocks and 142 flats within just 1 month.

Our client had assessments with the fire brigade to determine associate risks and ensure all residents were alerted in the event of a fire. We worked closely with the client and the assessors to ensure requirements were met.

The Future Fire Solution

We carried out signal strength tests prior to works commencing to ensure all devices would have a strong path back to the fire alarm system within each block. We installed more than 600 devices over 20 blocks, consisting of smoke detectors complete with sounder bases, heat detectors complete with sounder bases and manual call points.

Our engineering team arranged logistics surrounding the access and liaised closely with the residents, taking this headache away from the property manager.

We faced a few challenges whilst on-site including cable routes for mains supply and restricted access at times. We worked closely with our expert electricians to plan alternative and safe methods and together provided solutions to the issues we were faced with. We kept in touch daily with our client and organised access schedules with the residents, which ultimately helped our quick turnaround as we were able to access all properties smoothly and efficiently.

The residents now have peace of mind knowing that they will be alerted immediately in the event of a fire anywhere in the building.

Since installation, our client has been so pleased with our services that they have asked us to take over the fire alarm and emergency lighting maintenance over the entire site…
